Description
On the morning of 6 April 1966, more than 200 students and several teachers at Westall High School and Westall State School in suburban Melbourne, Australia, witnessed a low-flying object descending behind a stand of pine trees on the school's eastern boundary.
Witnesses described a grey, saucer-shaped or disc-like craft, roughly twice the size of a family car, that hovered for several minutes before climbing rapidly and departing at high speed toward the south. During the event, several small aircraft were seen circling the object — the students believed them to be military aircraft attempting to intercept it.
The students were reportedly told by school authorities to remain silent about what they had seen. The following day, some witnesses reported that they were debriefed by men in dark uniforms. Grass at the supposed landing site was later found flattened and scorched, though subsequent soil analysis found nothing conclusive.
The Westall incident remains one of Australia's most significant mass UFO sightings and is often compared with the Rendlesham Forest case in the UK. After 50 years of silence, many of the original witnesses have since come forward publicly to describe the event, and their testimony has been documented in several films and interviews.
