Description
On the morning of 16 September 1994, sixty-two schoolchildren at Ariel School in Ruwa, Zimbabwe — a small town about 20 kilometres east of Harare — reported seeing a landed craft and one or more non-human beings in a field beyond the school playground.
According to the children's accounts, during their morning break they saw a silver or metallic disc-shaped object descend and land in the brush beyond the school fence. The object emitted a bright light and a humming sound. Shortly afterward, one or more small beings appeared near the object. The children described the beings as about one metre tall, with large heads and black, almond-shaped eyes, dressed in dark, tight-fitting clothing.
Perhaps the most unusual element of the accounts — and the reason the case is often cited in the literature — is the claim by many of the children that they received a telepathic message from the beings. The message, as they described it, concerned the damage humanity was doing to the environment, and warned of the consequences of technological development without regard for nature.
The children ranged in age from about six to twelve. Their accounts were consistent across the group in structure and detail, though they varied slightly in the exact phrasing of the alleged telepathic communication. Teachers and school staff initially treated the story with scepticism, but the coherence and persistence of the children's testimony attracted the attention of international researchers.
The case was investigated by Harvard University psychiatrist Dr. John Mack, who travelled to Ruwa and interviewed the children in a carefully controlled setting. Mack, who had previously researched accounts of abduction experiences, found the children's testimony credible and noted that their accounts were not the result of suggestion or leading by adults. His involvement brought international attention to the case.
The Ruwa incident remains unexplained. It is notable for the age of the witnesses, the size of the witness group, the consistency of their accounts, and the telepathic content of the message they claim to have received.
